Captain Joseph Riley
Master Mariner / Trainee Solicitor
Joseph is a Master Mariner with 13 years’ sea-going experience, who has held command of vessels such as the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) emergency towage vessel on the Australian Great Barrier Reef and the Trinity House vessel THV Patricia before moving ashore. During his sea-going career, Joseph served onboard a range of world-wide trading merchant vessels, including offshore survey and geophysical drilling vessels, emergency towage vessels, passenger ro-ro vessels, tankers and buoy tenders.
Joseph has a depth of knowledge in emergency towage, pollution response and current navigational practice. Joseph also has experience in shore-based operational management and has a thorough understanding of international shipping matters, both onboard and ashore.
Joseph joined Winter Scott in July 2018 and is a member of the dedicated Casualty Team, to which he brings his recent experience of current navigational practice, practical salvage and towage. During his time at Winter Scott, Joseph has also been involved in a number of ‘dry’ shipping matters in both the High Court and LMAA Arbitration, with a particular focus on speed and performance, unsafe berth and charterparty redelivery disputes.
After coming ashore, Joseph obtained a Distinction in the Graduate Diploma in Law and is currently completing the Legal Practice Course alongside the SRA training contract.
Joseph is a Master Mariner with 13 years’ experience at sea in all ranks, from Cadet to Master.
